Mistspeech

The speech of those who stayed too long in The Mist Sea and came back. Both realms half fear it and half need it.

The Ones Who Came Back

Some of the Shimobe and traders who spend long stretches in The Mist Sea return speaking differently. They are called mistspeakers, and both sides treat them with a mixture of dread and inconvenience. Many Canopy inns refuse them lodging; The Root Realm, by contrast, will sometimes grant them a measure of respect as people who carry knowledge from the deep. The difference in treatment is itself a reading of how each realm regards the mist.

What They Report Hearing

Mistspeakers' accounts share features. "Something is moving that is not the airflow." "The voice has no name." The Great Fall Research Institute would prefer to file these as disturbances of the mind, but there are records of several mistspeakers, questioned separately, producing the same phrasing — too consistent to dismiss as coincidence and too thin to build anything on. Most accounts follow the same order: the sensation of being called, a moment in which the speaker cannot recall their own name, and afterwards a changed way of speaking.

One Recorded Case

The oldest account held by the Institute belongs to a smuggler of The Mist Trading Company. He was lost in the mist for three days, and on his return he could not begin a sentence without saying his own name three times over. "Over there," he is recorded as saying, "they teach you that a name is borrowed." After that testimony the Institute assigned a small team to transcribe mistspeaker utterances. It has never found the rule underneath them.

An Awkward Alliance

The Mist Trading Company shelters mistspeakers as a matter of policy and keeps records of what they say. Why the company's inner ring cares so much is not known. There is a rumour that the custom of halting all company activity on the anniversary night of The Great Fall was set down by a mistspeaker. Protecting them rather than exploiting them sits oddly with a company otherwise known for putting profit ahead of everything.

What Changes in the Speech Itself

The few analyses that exist report two consistent traits: mistspeakers omit the subject of a sentence, and they almost entirely stop using words that divide time — yesterday, next year, the season after. Linguists at the Institute suspect this is because the mist offers no sense of duration, but questioning the speakers themselves yields nothing usable. One of them said only that time has a different shape over there, and would not be drawn further.
