Art Where Song and Light Intersect

A traditional art of song and light passed down in The Canopy Isles. It exploits the phenomenon whereby when a singer sings at specific pitches, the Aether crystals they wear resonate and emit light.

The color and intensity of light changes based on both pitch and emotion — skilled singers can make emotions visible without words. Joy is warm orange, sadness is deep blue, anger is red — but true masters blend emotions, creating complex gradients like a twilight sky.

The Pillar of Light at the Grand Lichtgesang Festival

Once a year, during the season when Aether Crystals shine brightest, the "Grand Lichtgesang Festival" is held. When hundreds of singers perform simultaneously, the entire island is dyed in seven colors and a pillar of light rises skyward visible even from The Mist Sea. On this day the entire Canopy Isles is enveloped in celebration, and even the Great Fall Research Institute halts work for the day.

Root Realm people have long kept this art at a distance as something difficult to understand. Yet recently, underground arts influenced by Lichtgesang have been emerging through boundary trade. "Root Lichtgesang" using mycelium's bioluminescent phenomenon is developing quietly without the knowledge of the original.

From Long-Distance Signal to Art

Lichtgesang's origins trace back to the chaotic period immediately after The Great Fall. In an era when means of communication between isolated islands had been lost, it began as a long-distance signal system using Aether Crystal light-emission patterns. "That island is still alive" was communicated through light pulses — and that evolved into art. Those who know this origin read a desperate past in the pillar of light at the Grand Lichtgesang Festival.

Training and the Resonance Sense

Lichtgesang Singer training begins in childhood, and it takes more than 15 years to be recognized as fully accomplished. The hardest thing to attain is said to be not pitch control but the "resonance sense" with Aether crystals — the feeling of one's own emotions and the crystal's vibration becoming one. Singers who have acquired it say that during performance they can no longer tell whether they are "singing light" or "light is singing through them."

The "Chant of The Great Fall" performed at the end of the Grand Lichtgesang Festival is a traditional piece depicting the day of The Great Fall. During this piece performed by the most celebrated Lichtgesang Singer, the entire venue is dyed deep blue and everyone falls silent. It is a warning embedded within the festival — one that must never be forgotten.
