Aether crystals cut from the same parent stone exhibit a subtle resonance no matter how far apart they are. The communication technology developed by applying this "paired crystal resonance" is the Aether Communication Sphere.

The Communication Mechanism and Its Limits

Sound waves directed at one of a pair of resonant crystals enclosed in a spherical container causes the resonant crystal to vibrate and transmit the signal to the other. Information transmission speed approaches the speed of light and virtually no distance-based delay occurs. The Canopy Council has installed these at major bases on each island, where they function as the primary means of inter-island communication.

However, resonance is disrupted at positions too far from the parent stone or near The Mist Sea. Regular trade still relies heavily on messenger pigeons along Wind Bridge routes for official communication with The Root Realm, remaining one of the Canopy Council's technical challenges.

The Illegal Application with Mistfish Body Fluid

As an unexpected application, it was discovered that Mistfish body fluid amplifies signals. Smugglers have used this to build illegal communication networks that function even inside The Mist Sea where normal communication spheres cannot reach — contributing to the Mist Trading Company's high information-gathering capability. The Canopy Council has prohibited possession of Mistfish body fluid, but it has fallen into a vicious cycle where prohibition promotes smuggling.

The Rare Craftsmen Called Stone Splitters

Creating Aether Communication Spheres requires specialists called "Stone Splitters." Because cutting a perfectly symmetric pair of child stones from one parent stone determines resonance precision, the Stone Splitter's skill directly affects communication quality. Currently only 23 certified Stone Splitters exist in The Canopy Isles; this scarcity maintains the high price of communication spheres.

Aether Communication Spheres have the characteristic of being "untappable." Since only the paired two crystals can receive the signal, eavesdropping is theoretically impossible. Yet there are rumors that a tapping device called "the third stone" is circulating in Rakuen's shadow market, and the Canopy Council's cipher division is desperately investigating.

For official diplomacy with the Root Realm Federation, Aether Communication Spheres cannot be used, so messengers are necessary. This inefficiency delays communication during crises, and the Great Fall Research Institute lists development of a new communication technology that can function across The Mist Sea as one of its top priorities.
