Dom Vicente Braga

Ambitious, impatient, more idealistic about Portugal's mission than his own superiors in Goa. Underestimates how little goodwill he has left to spend.

A Portuguese Restricted Factory clerk, sent to complete an unfinished conquest and finding himself unexpectedly attached to the port constraining him instead.

Backstory

Vicente Braga arrived at the Restricted Factory in 1517 as junior clerk to the resident factor, twenty-four years old and, by his own later account, considerably more confident in Portugal's rightful place at Malacca than eight years posted to a walled timber compound have left room for. He was raised on stories of the 1511 campaign told by veterans who framed the Strait Stand's outcome as an unfinished victory rather than a defeat, and arrived expecting to serve at the vanguard of the campaign's eventual completion.

Instead he has spent three years logging trade goods under a Directorate clerk's supervision, watching every letter to Goa take months to receive an answer that rarely resolves anything, and drafting the Tariff Dispute petition that now consumes most of his working hours -- a petition his own factor privately doubts will succeed, though he has not told Vicente so directly.

Vicente has grown genuinely, unexpectedly fond of Malacca itself in ways he finds difficult to reconcile with his professional frustration at the Factory's confinement -- fond of the Factories Row's noise, of a handful of relationships built across the compound wall despite the Restriction Rules' formal limits, and of Rahman Tuah's blunt, unsentimental company in particular, even as he continues to argue, in every dispatch he sends to Goa, that the terms constraining both of them should not stand much longer.
