The Memory of the Earth is a mycelium network woven throughout the entire underground expanse of The Root Realm — it is the very foundation of Root Realm civilization.

Mycelium can read, amplify, and transmit living beings' neural signals to other mycelium connection points. Root Realm people touch the mycelium in a ritual called "grounding," sharing emotions with distant family; healers adjust patients' life force through the mycelium connection.

Past Echoes and Mycological Archaeology

The Memory of the Earth is more than a communication network — it has the property of preserving "echoes" of past events. Skilled Earth-Vein Speakers can reportedly access memory fragments hundreds of years old, and Root Realm history has developed its own field of "mycological archaeology."

The origin of the Memory of the Earth is debated. The most widely accepted hypothesis is that the shock of The Great Fall drove surface mycelium deep underground, where in isolated conditions it evolved advanced communication functions. Root Realm elders prefer a more poetic expression: "The earth was wounded, and mycelium grew to heal that wound."

The Hierarchical Structure of Trunk Mycelium

The Memory of the Earth is not a single network but a hierarchical structure of "nodes" centered on the seven great cave cities, connected by "trunk mycelium." The location of the trunk mycelium is the Root Realm Federation's highest secret — knowledge of it would allow The Canopy Council to paralyze communication across The Root Realm with a single strike.

The Mystery Called "The Age of Silence"

Mycological archaeology's greatest mystery is an era called "The Age of Silence." For approximately 50 years after The Great Fall, the Memory of the Earth went completely silent — data from this period is entirely absent. Even the eldest of the Mycelium Symbiont Tribe holds no memories of this age, a fact that deeply unsettles Root Realm scholars. What happened then — that question remains one of the most important unanswered questions The Root Realm faces.

The Canopy Council has repeatedly attempted to develop technicians capable of connecting to the Memory of the Earth, but every Canopy person who has tried fell into a coma from sensory overload. The Root Realm Federation explains that the neural processing structures of Root Realm people and Canopy people are fundamentally different — but whether this is a natural barrier or a deliberate connection-refusal mechanism remains unknown.
