Sora Kazamachi

Strong sense of justice, impulsive. Uses the inferiority complex from growing up on a lower island as a driving force.

A gifted Aether Refiner from a lower island. Convinced of The Great Fall omens, she seeks dialogue between sky and earth.

Backstory

Sora Kazamachi

Sora grew up on the lower island "Kasumi-Kyokai Island" of The Canopy Isles, looked down upon as "one close to the ground" by upper-island children from an early age. Yet she possessed innate talent in Aether refinement and obtained Stage 4 Aether Refiner certification at the youngest age in history.

Driven by resentment toward the Canopy Council and a sense of crisis over the Great Fall omens, Sora launches secret negotiations with The Root Realm. She is scheming to jointly investigate with Root Realm mycological archaeologists the evidence of The Great Fall that the Canopy Council dismissed as "lacking scientific basis."

Growing Up at the Edge

Kasumi-Kyokai Island sits at the lowest elevation of The Canopy Isles, where Aether Crystal density is thin and buoyancy unstable. Sora knew the feel of an island's buoyancy through the soles of her feet before she knew it in textbooks. The Refiners' Guild recognized her at sixteen, but her mentor delayed her advancement examination by a full year, citing her lack of upper-island backing. That year was not spent on patience. It was spent developing a precise, calibrated anger — every slight became data, every dismissal a reference point. Being looked down upon, she decided, was a vantage position.

Investigation and Alliance

Since Hane arranged her contact with Tsuchi, Sora has learned that the mycelium carries echoes of The Great Fall from a thousand years ago. If Tsuchi's mycelium records can be cross-referenced with Aether observation logs held by the Refiners' Guild, the full shape of the disaster becomes visible. Ishinochō's surveillance is no secret to her. But Sora can no longer stay silent while the sinking of lower islands is processed as "within the margin of error" by people who live far above them. Proximity to the ground was once a stigma. Now it is the one thing that gives her evidence the others lack.
