Hane Shirabe

Hane, a Shimobe smuggler flying between The Canopy Isles and The Root Realm, is one of the people who best knows the reality of both civilizations. Delivering Root Realm delicacies to upper-island nobles and carrying banned books from The Canopy Isles to Root Realm scholars.

Hane, who has felt the omens of The Great Fall as changes in Middle Sky air currents in their body, brokers the meeting between Sora and Tsuchi. They insist "it's business," but the actual motivation is a pressing sense of crisis about the collapse of the Middle Sky — The Canopy Isles falling means the disappearance of the Middle Sky itself.

Background

Hane first entered the Middle Sky at twelve. Born on a middle island of The Canopy Isles, they grew up near the Refiners' Guild without the talent or Council connections to join it. The Middle Sky — that gray space where neither civilization's laws fully reach — became the only territory Hane could call their own. The first cargo was dried root-fruit, prized among Root Realm nobility. Connecting people across a space neither side claimed: that was the work, and it was enough.

Turning Point

Three years ago, three Aether Crystal sensors failed simultaneously in a single night. The air current disruption was beyond any margin of error. That was the first night the Great Fall became physical — a shift in pressure, a wrongness in the current beneath the hull. Since then, Hane links Sora's observation data with Tsuchi's mycelium echoes, framing it all as "side business." Hane knows Ishinochō's surveillance has reached them, which is why the facade holds. If the Middle Sky disappears, everything Hane has built disappears with it. That fact moves even the most sardonic of brokers.
