The supreme technology of The Canopy Isles. An alchemical technique that refines Aether Crystals in stages to draw out higher functions including buoyancy, communication, and perceptual expansion.
The Seven-Stage Secret System
Aether Refinement is the foundational technology underpinning Canopy Isles civilization, and simultaneously a strictly controlled esoteric discipline.
Refinement is classified into 7 stages. Stages 1–3 (buoyancy control, light emission, basic communication) are open to general technicians, but Stage 4 and above (time perception, wide-area awareness, consciousness expansion) are permitted only to a small number of licensed "Apex Refiners." Apex Crystal refinement corresponds to Stage 7, and its method is transmitted only orally by the Refiners' Guild on Tenkoku Island.
The Licensing System Born from Crystal Runaway
Refinement failure triggers "crystal runaway," destabilizing the gravity field in the surrounding area. In the past, one lower island lost altitude through crystal runaway and fell into the Middle Sky — this incident was the catalyst for establishing the staged licensing system for Aether Refinement.
The origins of Aether Refinement predate The Great Fall. At that time, only elementary processing — polishing crystals to draw out light — was practiced. After The Great Fall, the urgent necessity of controlling buoyancy to maintain island altitude drove rapid technological development. The 7-stage system being established within just 50 years was a product of desperate circumstances with civilization's survival at stake.
The Guild's Independent Power
The Refiners' Guild now functions as a separate power structure from the Canopy Council. The Guild's supreme council is selected not by election but by hereditary recommendation and holds the privilege of refusing external audits. As a result, nothing of what is actually researched inside the Guild leaks outside. Rumors persist that Stage 8 refinement and beyond is being secretly researched, but there is no way to verify this.
Mycelium Silver imported from The Root Realm is used as a refinement catalyst, but since the Root Realm Federation controls Mycelium Silver production, the Guild sees this dependency as its greatest weakness. Information has leaked through Mist Trading Company channels that development of a substitute Root Realm catalyst is underway as a top-secret project.
The Cost Called "Stone-Glow"
Mastering Aether Refinement requires dedicating one's life to the craft. Beyond Stage 3, Aether particles begin to accumulate in a refiner's body; long-time practitioners develop a phenomenon called "Stone-Glow" (Ishibikari) in which their fingertips faintly luminesce. This is both the mark of a refiner and a harbinger of health damage from excessive accumulation.
